摘 要：A good understanding of the engineering behaviour of soft soil is essential to the design and construction of roads or embankments on soft ground. Use of suitable methods for the determination of soil properties for design is also important for engineering practice. In this talk, some key features of the soft soil behaviour including compressibility, consolidation and shear strength are discussed. Key design parameters and the methods of determination using either laboratory and in-situ tests are elaborated. Challenges related to soft clay that require future research are also pointed out.

报告人简介：
楚剑，南洋理工大学教授，土木与环境工程学院院长及城市对策研究中心主任。曾任美国爱荷华州立大学 (Iowa State University) 终身讲席教授 (James M. Hoover Chair Professor) 和长江学者讲座教授。长期致力于土的工程性质、岩土试验、微生物岩土、填海及软基加固技术的研究。曾担任国际土力学和岩土工程学会 “海岸岩土工程防灾减灾” 技术委员会主席。现任新加坡岩土学会会长，国际土力学和岩土工程学会 “填海技术委员会” 主席 及“地基处理技术委员会”委员等多职。受邀在60多个国际会议上做主题或特邀报告，包括2009年在17届国际土力学和岩土工程大会上做的发展水平报告。任Acta Geotechnica主编，及其它8个国际学刊付主编或编委，主持多项来自政府和企业的总计数千万美元经费的科研项目，并于2004年荣获加拿大岩土工程学会颁发的R. M. Quigley奖和2018年新加坡岩土工程学会颁发的杰出岩土工程师奖。
